MTV PUSH names Nessa Barrett as its featured Global PUSH Artist for the month of November. The New Jersey native opens up about her new, genre-defying debut EP, Pretty Poison, and how she found solace in the songwriting process. She explains how her new music has allowed her to finally share her truth and reclaim her power since moving to L.A. in 2020, describing it as her “most honest work yet.” Beyond the unconventional pop beats with reverb-heavy guitars and dark, evocative lyrics, the singer-songwriter shares that she wants to use her music to champion the messages dearest to her heart by advocating for mental health awareness.

On why Nessa loves to write her own music:

  • “The reason I write music is to cope. It’s not a job for me; it’s therapy. This EP was really just a huge coping session that I had and a story I needed to tell. I’m able to share things that maybe I shouldn’t say upfront.”

On the primary message she wants to send through her new music:

  • “The biggest thing that I wanted to portray with my EP is just the fact that the bad times never last as long they seem they’re going to. When you keep pushing through, life just holds so many good things. I can’t wait for the moment where everyone that relates to my music finds that out for themselves.”
