Check out the full song’s breakdown including Trip detailing how it came together.

Los Angeles singer-songwriter, producer, rapper, and “musician’s musician” Trip Carter returns with his new single “Excusesout now via Boom.Records. Produced entirely by Carter, the single kicks off with a funky chord progression and delves into an energetic late 90’s Pop/R&B tinged production providing the perfect base for Carter’s songwriting to shine. “Excuses” finds the charismatic crooner denying his infidelity by taking a page out of Shaggy’s playbook as he tries to save face and tells white lies with his tongue-in-cheek lyricism.

The song came together by messing around with bass chords. I’ve been trying to use the bass like a guitar, I closed the blinds, and that’s how the beginning got started,” Carter says. “The song itself is about being a f*ckup, and in my mind, I wanted to make my version of “It Wasn’t Me”.”

Carter gets his fun and soulful draw from his upbringing and Southern California roots. Raised in a musical household where his father played guitar, it was no surprise that Carter picked up the bass at ten years old and started playing in bands throughout his teen years. Musically inclined and drawing inspiration from an eclectic mix of legendary artists like Marvin Gaye, Prince, Stevie Wonder, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Drake, Kanye West, The Arctic Monkeys, etc., he started to write his songs at 16 years old. Eventually, he earned a Jazz scholarship to USC, where he would meet some of his early collaborators and develop his songwriting. Becoming a classically trained musician, Carter has worked with Alina Baraz, Sabrina Claudio, Felly, and more. Currently, he’s the bass player and a founding member of Claudio’s band and will be joining her on the North American run of The Weeknd’s After Hours Tour.

“Excuses” follows Carter’s release of “BATS” last year and his 2021 Slim Tripper EP, which helped reintroduce the polymath to listeners after a three-year hiatus. Carter started to gain a following on TikTok for his funky bass covers of popular songs. His undeniable talent and versatility are prevalent throughout his artistry as he melds contemporary R&B, funk, soul, jazz, pop, hip-hop, and rock elements into relatable hook-filled songs. The single is a glimpse of what’s to come from Trip Carter in 2022. Stay tuned for more news to follow, and listen to “Excuses”.
