The toughest cities mold the toughest champions. In 2020, Cleveland, OH unfortunately logged its highest number of homicides since 1982. For as rough as the city may historically be, it activated an intense will inside of NoonieVsEverybody. The 17-year-old rapper won’t let anything stop him from achieving his dreams or taking care of his family. That same indomitable spirit drives a series of 2021 singles and his forthcoming debut mixtape.
“The neighborhood I lived in was never peaceful,” he observes. “There was always violence. That’s why people don’t want to come here. Either you get out, or you die here. Even though it’s home, I’m going to get my mama and my people out of Cleveland.”
NoonieVsEverybody grew up fast. Mom worked hard as a home health aid to take care of him, acting as his “mother and father.” She also introduced him to classic hip-hop, and he developed a passion for everyone from Tupac and Jadakiss to Waka Flocka Flame and Gucci Mane. Between regular suspensions from elementary school, he channeled his troubles into raps, filling up small notebooks with songs and ideas as a kid during class, detention, and lunchtime.
“The struggle was the main focus of my rapping,” he elaborates. “I wouldn’t be rapping in the first place if I wasn’t telling a story about my neighborhood and everything I go through.”
In 2019, he cut his teeth by featuring on tracks by his uncle Trapper Entertainment, piling up YouTube views in the process. But, it was a freestyle on his Instagram initially caught the attention of LVRN. He signed to the label in conjunction with Interscope Records and immediately hit the studio. He made his official introduction with an appearance on the “LVRN Cypher” Spotify single alongside big-name heavyweights such as 6LACK, Westside Boogie, BRS Kash, and OMB Bloodbath. It generated millions of streams and attracted the attention of HYPEBEAST, HotNewHipHop, and many more.
However, it just set the stage for his proper solo introduction. NoonieVsEverybody’s debut single “Loyalty” tells a heartfelt and heartbreaking story in vivid detail. His confessional verses cut through sparse piano and beats as he admits, “I knew I was something, but I just couldn’t find nothing until I picked that pen up, hungry, stomach was rumbling.”
At the same time, he elegized another late uncle who, as he recounts, “told me if I want it, chase it, never think secondly.”
“‘Loyalty’ is really the start of my story,” he says. “It shows you why I’m doing everything I do.”
In the end, NoonieVsEverybody’s words will resound in his hometown and far beyond.
“When you listen to this, you’re going to feel it,” he leaves off, “A lot of people go through similar situations. I’m just being honest about all of it.”
