ABOUT ARIN RAY

Arin Ray’s approach to relationships and making music is strikingly similar. As he puts it, “I have no reason to not show you who I am.” His emotionally open songs often crystallize romantic moments and explore the deeply rooted dynamics within them. While the Cincinnati-born, L.A.-based singer’s perspective has matured, the same themes have dominated his work since his 2016 debut EP Phases and continued through his 2018 studio album Platinum Fire—boasting features from YG, Ty Dolla $ign, and DRAM) and subsequent high-water marks like his Kehlani collaboration “Change” (50 million Spotify streams and counting). Ray’s new Interscope EP, Phases III, is his most mature and playful release yet. Supported by revered co-writers and producers including Tricky Stewart and James Fauntleroy, Phases III celebrates thinking a bit less, going off of instinct, and having fun. The son of working soul musicians, Ray appeared twice on The X Factor as a teen before signing to Interscope in the mid-2010s. There, he found himself recording at the same time as Kendrick Lamar and SZA were working on To Pimp a Butterfly and CTRL respectively. Inspired by the creative energy around him, he felt a sense of purpose that has guided his career since. More than anything, Phases III is a whirlwind showcase of everything he has learned as a musician and partner in relationships during his formative years—clearly, the handiwork of an important artist entering a fresh and exciting chapter.
