The Filipino-born singer formally embarks on her solo journey today with the release of her new single and music video, “Holla.” The song and video feature will.i.am., who has collaborated with J Rey for the last six years since The Voice Philippines champion joined the Black Eyed Peas as a featured singer/artist in 2018. “Holla,” J Rey’s first release as a solo artist on Epic Records, is now available.
J Rey’s “Holla” puts a contemporary spin on one of the most recognizable dance melodies of the 1980s, Funkadelic’’s “(Not Just) Knee Deep.” Still, the Black Eyed Peas alum injects her own energy into the song, and the result is an infectious jam that positions J Rey to seamlessly transition into her own, solo pop dominance.
“Holla” comes on the heels of Black Eyed Peas’ 2023 ‘Elevation Tour,’ during which the group toured the world from April to August 2023. J Rey, who made headlines during the tour for everything from her glam routine to her musical journey, joined BEP in 2018 as their featured collaborative singer and immediately became both a group and fan favorite. Since then, she’s powered or contributed to a litany of big ticket BEP releases, including tracks like “Double D’z” and “Mamacita,” which peaked at #1 on Billboard’s US Hot Latin Songs and US Latin Airplay, the latter of which is approaching 400 million views on YouTube.
