Apple TV+'s 'Dear Edward' is a tear-jerking binge-worthy series drama heads will love
If you’re looking for one of the most compelling and heartbreaking - and healing - Apple TV+ series coming up, look no further than Jason Katims and Connie Britton’s new ‘Dear Edward’ series. Let me be very clear - this is not ‘Servant,’ ‘Ted Lasso,’ or even ‘Severance’ but my goodness, if you love a unique drama packed with emotion? You better believe this is up your alley.
To keep it 100? I personally do not believe this is a ‘Date Night’ movie which isn’t a bad thing - at all. Let’s keep is a buck, who really wants to be with bae holding back tears and needing tissues for the sniffles? However, this is an absolute must-watch on your own if you’re looking for something compelling, diverse and a bit more true to life than you might realize.
Just imagine if ‘Lost’ was real but instead of a plane disappearing and going off the grid, the flight actually crashed. All of those personalized and individual stories come to life not from the viewpoint of the passengers but from the relatives of the victims.
Whether it’s promising acting careers or a full-fledged move from the East Coast to the West Coast, there are stories you’re going to find yourself relating to in some capacity. Avoiding spoilers but giving you some key things you can look forward to, I simply broke things down to three main reasons you’ll find yourself loving ‘Dear Edward’ on a solo viewing adventure.
The Apple TV+ cinematic appeal is superb
You know the feeling you get when you compare an HBO Max series to a Prime Video show? It’s obvious which one looks like it has the bigger budget and puts its touch on the cinematic presentation. Well, with a handful of awards and nominations to its name, Apple TV+ doesn’t hold back on putting together series which are absolutely stunning.
Forget just 4K, it’s everything from the scenery to the glows and perfect moments of brightness and darkness you fall in love with. The same is true with ‘Dear Edward’ - the graphics and cinematography are absolutely breathtaking and the streaming platform continues to make strides in visual amazingness.
The diversity really feels like a modern day ‘Lost’ series
Yes, I am going back to another ‘Lost’ reference but it’s truly the one theme which kept coming back to my mind as I watched ‘Dear Edward.’ What made the series so mind-blowing - notably in its first couple of seasons - was every character’s backstory and connection to one another. Well, the same type of storytelling is present here with big secrets and reveals emerging with each episode.
From heartbreaking moments to jaw-dropping twists, the series does an excellent job in juggling both the grievance factor and healing process plus some surprisingly random but unique light-hearted humor.
The cast immediately wins you over
Low-key and high-key? I have loved Connie Britton for years and her presence in ‘Dear Edward’ is award-winning. While the focus does center on actor Colin O’Brien’s Edward Adler character, you can’t help but be blown away by Connie’s presence in the series and how she delivers every time her scene pops up.
But more than just her, the cast is one of the most unique and diverse I’ve seen. Here’s a sneak peek at who you can look forward to:
Hailing from Apple Studios, “Dear Edward” tells the story of Edward Adler (played by Colin O’Brien), a 12-year-old boy who survives a devastating commercial plane crash that kills every other passenger on the flight, including his family. As Edward and others all over the world are affected by the tragedy try to make sense of life after the crash, unexpected friendships, romances and communities are formed. “Dear Edward” stars Emmy nominee Connie Britton, SAG Award winner Taylor Schilling and introduces newcomer Colin O’Brien. The ensemble cast also includes Amy Forsyth, Anna Uzele, Audrey Corsa, Brittany S. Hall, Carter Hudson, Dario Ladani Sanchez, Douglas M. Griffin, Eva Ariel Binder, Idris DeBrand, Ivan Shaw, Jenna Qureshi, Khloe Bruno and Maxwell Jenkins.
Human feelings. Realism. Life. It all comes together in breathtaking fashion with ‘Dear Edward.’ Come up with a back-up plan for ‘Date Night’ and leave this as your personal series to watch - just make sure the box of tissues is nearby.
‘Dear Edward’ officially hits Apple TV+ Friday, February 3.
