For the global pop duo KAIRO, which means ‘the right time,’ composed of identical twin brothers AK and EJ, their moment is now. The brothers born in Lagos, Nigeria and moved to the United States at 16 months through an unexpected visa lottery. They grew up performing in their father’s church in Houston with AK on drums, EJ on piano and both singing. And like many first-generation kids, they experienced the duality of balancing their cultural heritage with that of their new home. Nowhere was that more apparent than in their musical tastes. The brothers named themselves KAIRO—a combination of their first names—in 2021 and released acoustic covers on TikTok. Their debut EP Love Letters from Houston helped to differentiated themselves from stereotypical TikTok artists by focusing on songwriting and cultivating high-energy live shows. Their debut album Are We There Yet?, coming in November, represents the next generation of Gen-Z pop groups with rich melodies, lush vocal textures and emotional songwriting. As young Black men and immigrants, KAIRO are aware of their unique position in the music industry. They want to represent expansion: from genre, borders and boundaries.
