King Von's tragic death gets fully examined in tonight's 'Hip Hop Homicides'

Low-key? The new ‘Hip Hop Homicides’ series is absolutely a must-watch for the culture. The WE tv’s ability to take deep dives into musicians we lost way too early in life from fatal incidents continues to go all-in with tonight’s episode focusing on the fatal shooting of King Von in 2020.

King Von’s life examined in tonight’s ‘Hip Hop Homicides’

What makes this series unbelievable is just how much you get sucked into it. Things kicked off last week with its premiere centering on the life of New York rapper Pop Smoke and continues to focus on fatally slain young rap superstars with Chicago’s King Von being the highlight this time around.

A certain trend happening in just two episodes is getting the show started with conversations with the musician’s immediate family. Just like the Pop Smoke episode, you meet King Von’s mom and she acknowledges how much they were alike from being shy to having certain habits they both shared.

Von’s godmother is even introduced and of course his sister Kayla B. It’s pretty astonishing because the series provides a lot of perspectives and gives each person the platform to speak their minds.

Whether it’s the promise of peace never going down with Von’s opps - notably Quando Rondo - or hearing his artist talk about the need for violence to end - there’s no ‘one’ narrative being highlighted.

The series host Van Lathan does an excellent job of limiting the censorship and giving you those raw, real emotions from everyone he talks to.

Key example?

Just look at how things tense up on tonight’s episode with Von’s ex-girlfriend Asian Doll giving a rare interview about the situation. While things seem to start up fine, you’ll notice how quickly it escalates with tensions, emotions and Doll quickly switching her feelings about Lathan’s approach to asking questions fast-fast.

Another reason the series works - notably this episode - is because of Lathan’s determination to connect with people not directly connected to the subject. For example, Chicago native Vic Mensa talks to Van about his city’s knack for violence and with buzz about the Atlanta police having involvement in killing one of King Von’s associates, there’s a New York legal expert brought in to share perspectives.

To keep things 100? You get so brought into this series to the point you blink and it’s already in the final moments of the show.

Excellent series with an amazing second episode keeping the momentum going.

Must-watch.

WE tv’s ‘Hip Hop Homicides’ airs tonight at 9 PM ET.
