Last Week in Pro Wrestling Today: Forbidden Door has arrived, Bobby Lashley won't stop, Becky Lynch's on a mission
The Forbidden Door is here. AEW has been promoting the hell out of this pay per view for a long time now and the culmination is finally here. This was written before the show tonight. It should be another awesome show. Probably another marathon of a show, but another awesome one nonetheless. WWE is hitting their take home show for Money in the Bank. The field is not quite set, but we are getting there and getting ready for Las Vegas. Let’s start with how WWE did this week.
Monday Night Rawness…
Monday Night Raw led off with some surprising news that Rhea Ripley will not be able to compete as she sustained an injury while training. This made way for a Fatal 5 way match with Carmella, Asuka, Becky, Liv and Alexa. The winner fills in for Rhea against Bianca Belair at Money in the Bank. In another great showing from all the competitors involved, Carmella was able to steal the match from Becky by pinning Liv after a super kick. All these women were able to show the women’s division on Raw is in good hands until we get the news on what is happening with The Boss Sasha Banks and The Glow Naomi.
Becky went to Adam Pearce to find a way into the match at Money in the Bank, only to have to challenge Asuka for a spot in the Money in the Bank ladder match. Which was the main event for the evening. We will talk about that here shortly.
Bobby Lashley continued his pursuit of Theory and his title calling him out and getting an opportunity to earn a match against the youngest United States Champ in WWE history. Bobby Lashley had to run the gauntlet against both members of the Alpha Academy and a surprise third competitor. Lashley put in max effort against both Chad Gable and Otis (LOOK AT THAT FACE!) In both really good matches, Lashley waited for his last opponent who was non other than Theory himself. Beaten down and wore out, it looked like Theory was going to just walkthrough Lashley only to be rolled up and pinned ensuring we get Bobby Lashley vs. Theory at Money in the Bank. Should be a good one this coming Saturday night.
Be honest, while this Ezekiel/Elias and Kevin Owens drama has been brewing for a while, it was pretty funny this week. Elias showed up. He gave us a concert, only to be interrupted by Kevin Owens and then challenged to a match at Money in the Bank against any of personas Elias or Ezekiel can come up with. It was super entertaining and I get a big laugh at how personal Kevin Owens takes the situation. It’s just great to see how committed to this storyline he is. It has to be fun as hell.
To the main event of Becky and Asuka. These two women are top tier talent, male or female. They are headline capable of any pay per view. They are that good in the ring together. This match will not be the end of their story together. Asuka earned the victory over Becky to get into the ladder match. Something tells me Becky will do something to cost Asuka the match. We will have to wait and see, but damn it I can’t wait to see it unfold.
SmackDown drama…
SmackDown revolved around Drew and Sheamus trying to figure how to get back in to the Money in the Bank ladder match. Adam Pearce apparently overstepped putting them both in the match. The solution was brought to us by the Wise Man, Paul Heyman. Drew and Sheamus must defeat probably the best tag team on the planet (yes I said it) The Usos in the main event on Smackdown.
The Ring General Gunther had his first title defense against the former champ Ricochet. In an exhibition of how WWE is planning to use Gunther, he squashed the fan favorite. Gunther will be champ for a while, and I for one am all for this. He was great when he was chubby, he’s great as this character as well. Who will be next to challenge the Ring General? Who do you want to see challenge him next?
This Ronda/Nattie storyline is getting personal. They are throwing haymakers at each other on the microphone. Nattie came out dressed as Ronda and decided to cut a promo as the baddest woman on the planet. Cue Ronda. As they were talking, Nattie uses a stroller to attack Ronda. It was unorthodox but effective. I honestly do not see them putting the title on Nattie, but she is playing a pretty good heel at the moment. Hopefully she is able to put on the quality of match we saw from Shotzi and Raquel Rodriguez against Ronda for Money in the Bank.
Drew and Sheamus took their shot at the Usos to get into the Money in the Bank match. They clearly were not interested in teaming together as there were spots where they were just fighting each other. Kind of expected from the rivals. The Usos were able to take advantage of that in some instances. The Usos were not able to win the match though. Drew and Sheamus were able to find a way to get the job done as Drew was able to hit a claymore and pick up the victory. Drew and Sheamus are in the ladder match. We still don’t have the full field announced, but this week has to fill out the field. I wonder who is able to get in this week.
All Elite Wrestling locked and loaded…
AEW was fully focused on Forbidden Door this week. Bryan Danielson came out to cut his promo letting everyone know of his injury and that he will not be able to compete at Forbidden Door and Blood and Guts. This was driving him crazy! He let everyone know he has someone in line to replace him though. But, who could it be? The element of surprise is on his side. We have to wait and see what they have lined up going forward. I can imagine it will be someone worth the time and money.
We all remember the pipe bomb, we all remember MJF going super hard at Tony Khan in his rant, now we can add Christian Cage to the mix. Christian got personal. Christian pushed the envelope to uncomfortable levels. He got our attention. Luchasaurus came to the defense of his friend Jungle Boy only to be told something off the mic which spooked him to not hurt Christian. Now we have to wait to see what he said. Is this the end of the Jurassic Express? Man I hope not.
The final four is set for the All Atlantic title after Malakai Black went to war with Penta. Malakai Black and Penta tore the damn house down. It was hard hitting and entertaining as hell. Just a great display of two performers who were in sync with one another. Malakai Black picked up the win and was then attacked by the Bastard Pac. After Pac was done with Black, Miro had his promo video come up just reminding everyone who they will be dealing with on Sunday night. I got Miro winning this one, but I am bias as he is legit my favorite wrestler in AEW. We will have to wait and see.
The main event was Jon Moxley and his opponent Tanahashi from NJPW vs. Jericho Appreciation Society. As the match went on and on, setting up Blood and Guts, cue Eddie Kingston, Santa & Ortiz, just fighting anyone that moves. The Blackpool Combat Society got involved. It was just pure chaos. It was awesome! While all of this is happening outside the ring, inside the ring in a comical fashion Mox and Tanahashi are staring each other down. Imagine the house burning down and two people are just staring at each other to see who flinches first. Their match for the Interim AEW championship will headline tonights show, and it should be dope AF as Mox is willing to die for this. Tanahashi will have to match that energy. Can he do it?
Tonight should be fun. If you’re a professional wrestling fan, be ready to have a long night ahead of you. Another good week of wrestling. If I missed anything you wanted to talk about, drop a comment in the comments section or hit me up on Twitter: @zero2hero or IG: RProctor23. Have a great week!
