Mason & Julez reveal their fave Australian snack, decode their 'Playlist' and talk new album
It’s not just Nicole Kidman, Iggy Azalea and Ben Simmons representing for Australia these days. Music duo Mason & Julez are on the steady hip-hop grind with their fire tunes and getting their grown man flexes despite still being teenagers.
From dropping their new ‘Playlist’ anthem to the masses to gearing up for their new studio album, there’s plenty for the duo to chop it up about. Kick back and learn more about the real-life brothers’ grind into the music biz and some of their favorite activities when they’re outside of the recording studio.
The most serious question I have for you is - it’s actually a two-parter, have you met Nicki Minaj yet?
Mason & Juelz: No, no. Not yet.
Okay, you don’t see where this is going. When you do meet Nicki, are you going to show her the very first Instagram post of you two as kids turning up to ‘Anaconda?’ It’s super fun, it’s super crazy. I think it’s September 2018 and it’s you guys as little kids turning up to ‘Anaconda.’
Julez: Oh really?
Mason: Ah, I remember now.
As dope as you guys are as musicians, there’s a fun, comedic element with what we see in ‘Playlist.’ You guys are still teenagers and trying to have a little bit of fun but talk about adding a little bit of the comedy side to maybe just the visuals or the sound.
Mason: We wrote the treatment for ‘Playlist’ because when we wrote the song initially, it was just a fun vibe and it felt good. In the midst of it, we always have these little dialogue things where we’re always doing something in the middle that’s funny. None of that was really planned. They sort of just went off. My uncles are in it, actually. Two of my uncles are in the blue suits. We were like, ‘Pretend you like it and then you’re just going to go off.’
Julez: It’s a feel good song.
Who pulled the trigger to move from Australia to the City of Angels?
Mason: We all teamed up with our parents. It was kind of like this thing, there’s four boys in our family and we’re all kind - yes, one girl too - and we were all getting into music and we were like, ‘We should really go to America for some of this stuff.’ We had a dream. We would always try to convince mom and dad and they were like, ‘Ehh, I don’t know.’ It is a crazy thing to move from Melbourne to LA. We tried to convince them and then we convinced my sister.
After that, mom was like, ‘If you guys are going, we’re going.’ So mom and dad were like, ‘We’re going.’
Julez: We all teamed up on it.
How has the LA life been for you guys? Has it been a few years now? What are some lifestyles you’ve embraced?
Julez: It’s been a couple years. Before that, we were going back and forth and then got settled. The LA lifestyle? Just going to the beach. Australia’s not always hot like it is here, in LA. So there’s surfing, going to the beach and playing basketball.
Mason: One thing that I can definitely say is there’s a lot of music opportunities in LA and America. You just walk by someone in the street and they’re a producer. It’s crazy. In Australia, there’s not much of that. You would really have to look around. I think in LA, there’s so much creative - it’s very much about chasing your dreams. That’s a cool part of LA. There’s a lot of opportunities.
