Peter Chelsom: 7 things we learned from the 'Serendipity' filmmaker from having a Rom-Com classic to its place on all-time achievements (Exclusive)

It’s not everyday you have the chance to talk to a filmmaker known for putting together quite possibly the best romantic comedy of all-time - or at least a Top 5 contender on every annual list your favorite publications not named Attack The Culture put out around the holidays. The one and only Peter Chelsom pulled through for an amazing interview dishing on his Serendipity classic’s 20th anniversary, his personal feelings about it and everything in-between.

Check out 7 things we learned from the globally known director.

1. He’s accepted the fact ‘Serendipity’ is an all-time great

One of the best moments from the conversation with Chelsom came from him coming to terms with just how much people have embraced his undeniably classic film. Whether it’s from the perfect pairing of John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale or how the film has aged like fine wine these past couple of decades, Peter said he embraced how much acclaim his fan-approved classic has received in recent years and is accepting of the fact both fans and publications have put this in the talks of the all-time greatest romantic comedy - ever.

While he wouldn’t give his film the G.O.A.T. title, he did acknowledge being proud of it seemingly to ‘always’ make the yearly write-ups and roundups of Top 5 and Top 10 romantic comedies.

2. Chelsom made sure to re-watch his classic ahead of his media day

Most notably, Chelsom joked about preparing for this media day and re-watching the film. Despite being asked about this movie in practically any interview he finds himself in, he spoke on still needing a refresher to see it as both a director and the average diehard viewer - still noticing little tidbits he may have forgotten.

3. Peter made sure to snap some epic pics on-set

Whether he knew the film would be an all-time classic or just wanted to show off some impressive camera work, Chelsom actually snapped must-see pics from the set. The photos included looks at everyone from John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale to everyone’s favorite ‘Entourage’ actor Jeremy Piven. The below pics are all shot and courtesy of Peter Chelsom.

4. It’s OK for films to be 90 minutes

Easily one of the low-key best moments from the conversation included how the film masterfully comes in at 88 minutes while today’s norm seems to feel like 120 minutes minimum. Chelsom acknowledged the film didn’t need to drag on or have unnecessary scenes added to it and embraced the fact he was able to tell this unforgettable love story in just under 90 minutes.

5. Everyone still wants to talk about Serendipity

Despite having a new film he shot in Italy called Security - Peter joked about practically the entire world wanting to always bring up Serendipity no matter what. Can you blame him?

6. A sequel isn’t in the works but could work…

While it’s the 20th anniversary and reunions are in fashion as ever - just look at ‘Sexy & The City’ and ‘Friends’ in recent months - Peter has not pushed and forced a sequel or film turned TV series despite how much fans might still want it. However, anything is possible and Chelsom wouldn’t mind exploring this if talks really heated up.

7. Peter Chelsom is an amazing interview

While this isn’t exactly something related to the film we learned, the best part of talking to this famous director is Peter Chelsom himself. This one time when audio isn’t provided hurts the most because of just how amazing of an interview he is. From his cheerful personality to honest thoughts and reflections on what this project has meant to both himself and the world, Chelsom is a true gentleman with a personality you hate to be told you only have another question or two before needing to end the conversation.

Charming. Delightful. Insightful. All things and more could be used to describe Peter Chelsom.

Serendipity officially celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
