Poncho Biggs: 10 Things We Learned In 10 Minutes (Exclusive)
Chicago might just have some of the hottest past, present and future rap artists in the game. Whether you’re still attached to the Common, Twista and Kanye West era of rap legends or have found yourself stuck to more relatively young rap veterans like Lil Durk and G Herbo or are keeping tabs on impressive rookies like Polo G and Poncho Biggs - chances are Chi-Town is well-represented in your playlists.
Fortunately for ATC, we had a chance to connect with rap grinder Poncho Biggs for a jam-packed Q&A to let folks know just what he’s been up to in 2021 from dropping songs like “Back Into It” and “Like That” to possible things brewing with himself and vixen turned musician Blac Chyna. Kick back and check out 10 Things We Learned In 10 Minutes with Poncho Biggs.
1. Poncho Biggs Wasn’t Always Poncho Biggs
That’s been my nickname since I was like a little dude, like a baby. Biggs, that’s my grandpa’s last name so it all kind of ties me into one. Before, I used to go by Lil Kaotik and then I took the ‘Lil’ from my name and I just changed it to Kaotik. Now on the lowest key, I was screaming ‘Poncho’ while I was still Kaotik on some songs. That’s the alias. I just figured, ‘Okay, I’m going to go ahead and make it the official name.
2. Respect For Chicago Legends Is Deeper Than Just Yeezy
I was born in Chicago. I actually stayed in the suburban part of Chicago but I am repping Chicago all day. No disrespect to the dudes in my age range and my lane, I definitely gotta give salutes to the OGs like Twista, Kanye, Common. All the old heads, even Do or Die. Even Da Brat - she’s from Chicago too. That’s my Mt. Rushmore for sure.
3. Kanye Would Easily Fit Onto ‘Back Into It’ + ‘Like That’ Remixes
I feel like Kanye would fit perfectly for both of them. For real. He just tapped into the UK drill on this new album so he could get a little flow going on that. It’s a couple of songs [on Ye’s DONDA] and I’ll play them and some of my guys will be like, ‘Who’s this?’ and I’m like, ‘You haven’t heard the new album? It’s got some songs on there.’
4. Poncho Shared The Same Stage W/ Young M.A In Indiana
I was just kind of like an opening act for her. We didn’t get a chance to really link up and meet. She did her thing though, shout-out Young M.A. Hopefully in the future we’ll be able to work together and be on the same ticket.
5. Biggs Knows Blac Chyna Better Than You + Us
I’ve been knowing Blac Chyna. The first time I met Blac Chyna I was in high school and I was 17, 18 and now I’m 23. We’ve just been cool through a mutual friend. Really it’s through my boy Antonio Velaz. He’s the one - and just to throw this into it - who put ‘Back Into It’ together. Basically I know her through him. We’ve got some work we’re going to do soon. She’s dope. She actually can spit.
6. Poncho Had To Step It Up For ‘Back Into It’
My boy Antonio pretty much put it together and we thought it would be a good idea to do something different. We did a little something for the ladies so they could twerk. My boy Antonio pretty much put it together and we thought it would be a good idea to do something different. We thought BAHA [BANKS] would be a good fit. I was just low-key around her - not like that - but I had been around her and some people had mentioned her name and was like we might as well. It was kind of like a sign. Let’s get that cracking.
7. Have Patience… A ‘Back Into It’ Music Video Is Coming
We’re working on [a music video] right now. I just posted on my Story today I’m looking for some girls. We’re getting some girls together. We already have the location and we just need to get the girls right now. We’re in Chicago.
8. There Can Be Only One… Streaming Service
I definitely go to Apple Music first. Or it’s this little app I use called Musi. My music definitely should be on there. It’s kind of like a little YouTube thing. You can play the music on there and you can close the app and the music will still play. To be honest, I never really dug into [the non-music content]. I see it but I just listen to albums and stuff like that.
9. Spotify Is For The People But Definitely The Creators
[For artists], I’d say Spotify because I feel like what I’ve looked at with like Apple Music, it’s more on there with playlists. I feel like there’s just more there for artists.
10. Poncho Saw Nipsey Hussle As More Than A Rapper
To me, he’s motivation because for me he’s an artist who put out dope music, opened up a store and gave back to the community. I’m not going to lie to you - I always heard about Nipsey but when he died though, it kind of made me feel some type of way because it was like, ‘Dang, in front of his own store?’ I just was like, I’m going to use what he did as motivation because he really did some good stuff and put out some dope music.
