Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s ‘The Defiant Ones’ heads to Hulu next week
While you’ll have to wait a few more days before diving right in, the series heads to Hulu on September 19 and comes loaded with some amazing must-see content.
Allen Hughes (Menace II Society, Dead Presidents) has made an unquestionably bold film about the unlikely but unbreakable bond of trust and friendship between Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, two street-smart men from different worlds who have shaped many of the most exciting and extreme moments in recent pop culture.
The Defiant Ones tells the stories of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre -- one the son of a Brooklyn longshoreman, the other straight out of Compton -- and their improbable partnership and surprising leading roles in a series of transformative events in contemporary culture. From director Allen Hughes (Menace II Society) this revealing, compelling and often-gritty story takes place in recording studios, in humble homes and massive mansions, in criminal courts and in the highest corridors of corporate power.
Hughes shows how decades of defiance and determination helped Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre build a few empires, make a series of American dreams come true and transform two American street kids from different tough neighborhoods into a global force to be reckoned with. This epic look at America shows how you can consistently defy conventional wisdom and even logic, and still win big.
The four-part documentary event is told with the help of many of the most notable artists and figures of our time, reflecting Hughes' unfettered access to Iovine, Dre and the remarkable cast of figures who have been a part of their success story. In addition to extensive interviews with Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, who speak frankly about their highs and lows, the show includes interviews with such music icons as Bono, David Geffen, Eminem, Nas, Ice Cube, Gwen Stefani, Jon Landau, Tom Petty, Trent Reznor, Snoop Dogg, Bruce Springsteen and will.i.am. The series also features never-before-seen footage from a multitude of recording and writing sessions with Eazy-E, JJ Fad, Stevie Nicks, N.W.A., Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and U2, among others.

XXXTentacion and Kanye West's True Love is all about those harder feelings
It’s tough to realize it’s been nearly four years since XXXTentacion had his life taken away from the culture but thanks to the power of music, his legacy lives on. His posthumous ‘True Love’ anthem with Kanye West a.k.a Ye is unbelievably hard-hitting and packed with emotion.

XXXTentacion and Kanye West’s ‘True Love’ is heartfelt
With mounted anticipation for his Look At Me: XXXTentacion Hulu premiere, Ye played his part to make the event even more amazing by coming together to make this record come to life.
Says John Cunningham, X’s longtime collaborator, on the creation of the track, “For four years the song has been playing in my head. Ever since X first started singing “True Love” around the house in early 2018 it stood out to both of us as a special song. While we weren’t able to finish recording the song at the time, four years later in January of this year I had the opportunity to meet Ye while he was working on Donda 2 and I played him the demo of it. At the time it was only X’s vocal and my piano, but as soon as Ye heard it and started singing over the instrumental section in between X’s choruses, it felt like the song was always meant to be finished by him. As someone X has cited for years as one of his biggest inspirations both musically and more widely as an individual, Ye breathed a life into the song that I feel blessed to have been witness to. I couldn’t imagine being more proud of how this song came to be, both as a collaborator and as a friend trying to do right by the legacy of someone who was taken far before reaching their full creative potential.”
“True Love” plays over the end credits of LOOK AT ME: XXXTENTACION. The documentary is out now on HULU, which the New York Times calls “fascinating.”
The song’s cover art features X’s handwritten notes, scanned from a journal that his mother found recently, with design by Ye. In the past, XXXTentacion had enthusiastically expressed his admiration for Ye on social media. The official release of “True Love” represents a full circle moment and another milestone in his unprecedented legacy.
