MTV VMAs 2024 had all types of record-breaking moments
A massive salute goes out to VegasInsider.com for coming through on all of these big alerts and details. Clearly? Taylor Swift dominated the annual showcase as she tends to do every year.
OVERALL AWARDS WON
After winning 7 VMAs in 2024 out of 12 nominations, Taylor Swift broke Beyoncé’s record for the most VMAs ever won - prior to this year, Beyoncé had held the record with 25 competitive VMAs won as a solo artist and 29 overall wins including her work with Destiny’s Child and with Jay-Z (credited as The Carters) - meanwhile, Taylor Swift has now won 30 competitive VMAs as a solo artist (*as a side note, Beyoncé also won the non-competitive lifetime achievement Michael Jackson Vanguard award in 2014, so her total which includes that award and her work with Destiny’s Child and The Carters is also 30 VMAs won, however, Taylor Swift has the edge when it comes to competitive VMAs won as well as VMAs won as a solo artist)
Taylor Swift won in the following categories in 2024: Video of the year, Artist of the year, Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Editing & Song of the summer
Eminem broke his tie with Peter Gabriel and he became the solo male artist with the most VMAs ever won after winning 2 VMAs in 2024 (Best Hip Hop & Best Visual Effects) - Gabriel won 13 times while Eminem’s new total is 15 wins
Eminem also extended his record as the most awarded rapper at the VMAs after winning 2 more trophies in 2024 (he has won 15 VMAs in total)
VIDEO OF THE YEAR
Taylor Swift extended her record for the most Video of the year VMAs won - she has now won 5 times (for “Bad Blood”, “You Need to Calm Down”, “All Too Well: The Short Film”, “Anti-Hero” and now “Fortnight”) - the win in 2024 for “Fortnight” was Swift’s 5th Video of the year trophy, and it also made her the first artist to ever win the award 5 times (*as a side note, no artist other than Swift has ever won Video of the year more than 2 times)

Eminem (“Houdini”) tied Drake as the most awarded male artist in the Best Hip-Hop category after winning his 3rd trophy for “Houdini” (he previously won for “We Made You” and “Not Afraid”)

SZA tied the record for the most awards won in the Best R&B Video category (2 wins) after she won for “Snooze” (she first won in the category last year for "Shirt")
BEST K-POP
Lisa became the first solo artist to win twice in the Best K-Pop category after winning her second trophy for “Rockstar” (she first won the award in 2022 for “Lalisa”)
BEST LATIN
Anitta tied J Balvin’s record for the most wins (and most consecutive wins) in the Best Latin category - she won her third trophy in a row for “Mil Veces”; Anitta also broke her tie with Rosalía for the most wins in the Best Latin category by a female artist and she is now the sole holder of the record with 3 wins (she previously won for “Envolver” in 2022 and “Funk Rave” in 2023)
VIDEO FOR GOOD
Billie Eilish tied John Legend and Big Sean for the most wins in the Video for Good category after winning her second trophy for “What Was I Made For” and she also became the first female artist to ever win twice in the category - she previously won in 2021 for “Your Power”
BEST DIRECTION
Taylor Swift broke her tie with David Fincher & Spike Jonze and she became the sole holder of the record for the most wins in the Best Direction category - the win in 2024 for “Fortnight” was Swift’s record-breaking 4th victory (she previously won for directing “The Man”, “All Too Well: The Short Film” and “Anti-Hero”)

Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin and Stray Kids are the first round of global music stars slated to perform at the 2023 “VMAs” LIVE from New Jersey’s Prudential Center on Tuesday, September 12th at 8PM ET/PT.
Demi Lovato
The 14x nominee and multi-hyphenated icon returns for her first “VMAs” performance in 6 years, days before the release of her highly anticipated new album REVAMPED which features rock versions of her hit songs. Demi’s many unforgettable “VMAs” moments include her 2015 stage debut with “Cool for the Summer” and 2017 performance of “Sorry Not Sorry.” The award-winning musician, who took home “Best Video with a Message” in 2012, is up for 2x categories: “Best Pop” and “Video for Good.”
Karol G
Colombian global recording artist, KAROL G will bring ‘Bichota Season’ to life on the “VMAs” stage for her first-ever appearance on MTV’s iconic stage. The history-making songstress, who holds the title as the first woman to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart with a Spanish-language album, will break from her first-ever stadium tour to compete for her first “VMAs” win after earning 3x nominations this year including “Artist of the Year.”
Måneskin
After Måneskin’s electric double “VMAs” and US award show debut last year – and history-making win for “Best Alternative” – the globally dominating rockers set their much-anticipated return to the storied MTV stage for the world premiere performance of their forthcoming new single “HONEY (ARE YOU COMING?),” releasing September 1st. As their latest album RUSH! is about to surpass the 1 billion streams mark, the 4x nominated group are also up for “Best Rock,” again setting records as the first Italian act to be nominated for two consecutive years in a main show category.
Stray Kids
Global K-Pop mavens Stray Kids will mark their first-ever “VMAs” performance with the US broadcast premiere of “S-CLASS,” off their latest record-breaking #1 album 5-STAR. The group also competes to take home their first MTV Moon Person for “Best K-Pop,” the same category which earned them their first “VMAs” nomination in 2022.

BLACKPINK, Jack Harlow, Lizzo and Måneskin are the next round of global superstar performers added to the must-see lineup at the 2022 “VMAs,” LIVE from Prudential Center on Sunday, August 28th at 8PM ET/PT.
BLACKPINK
The K-Pop sensations will make their U.S. award show debut with a can’t-miss, first U.S. performance of “Pink Venom,” live on the “VMAs” stage. In 2020, BLACKPINK made history as the first K-Pop girl group to take home a Moon Person (“Song of the Summer”) and look to take home a second in the all-new “Best Metaverse Performance” category. Group member LISA is also the first solo female K-Pop star and Korean soloist to ever be nominated.
Jack Harlow
After last year’s unforgettable “VMAs” debut collab of mega-hit “INDUSTRY BABY” with Lil Nas X, global superstar Jack Harlow returns to the MTV stage for his first solo performance. Tied for most nominations this year (7), including two of the night’s biggest awards, “Video of the Year” and “Artist of the Year,” Harlow looks to take home his first Moon Person.
The 10x nominee was first nominated in 2020 for “PUSH New Artist” and “Song of the Summer,” and again for “Song of the Summer” in 2021.
Lizzo
Following a show-stopping debut with a massive mashup of “Good As Hell” and “Truth Hurts” in 2019, the multi-hyphenate star is slated for another epic MTV moment with a performance of “2 Be Loved” from her critically acclaimed new album Special. The 11x nominee is also up for four awards this year, including “Artist of the Year” and “Song of the Year.”
Måneskin
Following a standout performance and “Best Rock” win at the 2021 MTV “EMAs,” Måneskin continues to spearhead a global rock resurgence and will now give their “VMAs” debut performance of #1 alternative hit single “SUPERMODEL.” The critically-acclaimed group are also up for two awards – “Best New Artist” & “Best Alternative” – making history as the first Italian act to be nominated in a main category.
