After catching fire with viral tracks from the likes of Playboi Carti, Rich the Kid, Nebu Kiniza, and Drake, plugg is thriving on the platform today and introducing a new wave of breakout plugg-inspired artists around the world who are evolving the scene, creating new micro-genres and sounds.

The proof is in the pudding - and SoundCloud playlists
Over the past few years, musicians have blown up on the SoundCloud platform. Its artist discovery program has also helped ignite artists to reach new heights in the competitive music biz.
Since launching in 2018, SoundCloud’s artist discovery program has helped propel rising sensations that first launched their careers on the platform like Grammy-nominated artists Kehlani and Baby Rose, breakout DJ Cuppy, fast-rising rapper Che Lingo, and chart topper Lil Tecca amongst others. In 2021, First on SoundCloud evolved into a year-long artist program investing in a group of breakout artists by helping them to reach career “first” milestones and connect with fans including SoFaygo’s first live performance to a sold out audience in his hometown of Atlanta, Charmaine’s one-of-a-kind music video release party in Toronto, a first-ever interactive fan event held an LA skate park for Payday, and a narrative film bringing the full artist class together for their cinematic debut.
One of the SoundCloud executives has since stepped up to dish on the program’s success.
“This group of 9 artists, each with their own sounds and identities, represent the next wave of stars in music on the cusp of breakout success — from breakout rapper KenTheMan to alt-rock inspired TITUS,” says Erika Montes, VP of Global Artist and Label Partnerships at SoundCloud. “Like so many of today’s most influential artists first discovered on SoundCloud, these emerging artists are growing their communities and connections with day-one fans on the platform. The First on SoundCloud program is about that unique journey, and we and we can’t wait to create new opportunities with them to amplify their careers and share memorable experiences with their fans on SoundCloud and beyond.”

The Return of an Afrikan Rebel doc
The new Return of an Afrikan Rebel goes all out to show Pa’s level up from childhood into his full-fledged venture into the music biz. There’s over 14 minutes of real-life exploration into PS’ journey.
Today SoundCloud has released a deeply personal documentary from emerging British-Gambian artist Pa Salieu. Produced in collaboration with Pa Salieu as part of the “First on SoundCloud” program and directed by Tayo Yussef, “The Return of an Afrikan Rebel” captures the artist as he travels back to Gambia for the first time since the age of 7. As a child, Salieu lived with his grandmother and elderly relatives in the West African country, describing that period as the most important time of his life, and the place where he gained his most profound musical influences.
Now 18 years later at the age of 24, SoundCloud has embarked on a visual coming-of-age journey alongside the British star as he reconnects with his culture and humble beginnings following critical acclaim for his EP Afrikan Rebel and a UK tour. The documentary showcases musical collaborations with local talent including ST Da Gambian Dream, a memorable live solo performance to over 30,000 fans, and powerful moments of connection in the country whose fabric shaped so much of his creative identity.
Pa Salieu can’t wait for you to watch the doc, too
The 24-year-old has since stepped forward to speak on the major film’s rollout. He specifically talked about how much it meant for him to return to Gambia and capturing the experience on footage.
“I will forever be grateful to my SoundCloud family for helping make this trip happen. For reasons beyond my control I’ve been unable to return to The Gambia since I came back to the UK as a child. This trip provided a chance to reconnect with family I haven’t seen for years, visit the burial site of my grandparents for the first time, collaborate with incredible local talent and perform in front of over 30,000 people. A moment I will never ever forget. I’m so proud of my country and culture and hope this film gives a small insight into the beauty and soul of The Gambia.”

In addition, SoundCloud is leveraging the power of social media with a new tastemaker series to shine a light on some of the brightest leaders in the world of music on how Black art and creativity has been a vehicle for Black history. The series, which will live across SoundCloud’s socials, will share stories through content featuring interviews, animations, and quotes kicking off today with Executive Vice President/GM of LVRN Records and partner in LVRN Management, Amber Grimes, followed by spotlights on Tommy Brown (CEO of Champaign Music Group & Publishing, Grammy Winner, and Multi-Platinum selling producer), and Barry Hefner (Co-Founder, Since the 80s).
Amber Grimes understands the importance of celebrating Black creators
Executive Vice President/GM of LVRN Records and partner in LVRN Management Amber Grimes has already weighed in on how Black Music can be a guidepost for the times.
“Black artists do an incredible job of telling our story and being a sign of the times. And those songs grow older for the next generation to understand what was going on or really helps us understand how things haven’t changed. I remember going into the street to be a part of a protest and everybody just started chanting Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Alright.’ We just have this air of hope especially when we’re together in packs, in 100s, that we’ll get through something. I remember that moment and I’ll never, ever forget that song.”
Grimes also dished on how she envisions her own legacy for generations.
“What I would like my legacy to be is just one of hope. Any young Black girl, any young Black person in general, I want them to always know and believe that they can be whoever they want to be and they can do whatever they want to do. Nothing can stop them, and they shouldn't take ‘no’ from anybody because I never have.”
