I spent all weekend playing NBA 2K23 and must crown it the best
Spoiler? There’s no one on NBA 2K23’s level when it comes to basketball video games. Of course the competition is just as limited as when it comes to football games with Madden but it’s worth noting NBA 2K23 took a giant leap forward to make sure its own level up is sky-high.
Spoiler? There’s no one on NBA 2K23’s level when it comes to basketball video games. Of course the competition is just as limited as when it comes to football games with Madden but it’s worth noting NBA 2K23 took a giant leap forward to make sure its own level up is sky-high.
NBA 2K23 is out everywhere right now and worth owning
For starters, the options for how you want to game and own NBA 2K23 are vast. Whether you want to go the safe route and secure the standard edition with Devin Booker on the cover or go all-out with the $149.99 option which is the Championship Edition - and comes with NBA League Pass - it really comes down to your budget and how invested you are in gaming.
While I would personally love to turn this into a full-fledged review of the new video game, we’ll allow this post to celebrate its global rollout across the globe but a couple mentions are necessary.
First, I gamed on NBA 2K23 all weekend long - from the MyCareer creation and Exhibition games to of course non-stop gaming with the Online play feature - every aspect of the game is solid.
I mentioned it on 2K day - the realism is insane - for real, for real. Whether it’s actual shooting motions or the fact you’re not going to be launching up 3’s with even the most lethal shooters in the game for four quarters without feeling it in the fatigue department - this is the first time I have played an NBA 2K game where strategy and the reward of playing at a real pace makes each experience memorable.
There are just a couple low-key issues regarding Classic Rosters (come on, I need Chris Webber on the ‘02 Kings) and some of my all-time favorite players not having signature tattoos on their bodies which throw me off but all in all? Super solid.
Today, 2K announced that NBA® 2K23, the latest iteration of the top-rated NBA video game simulation series of the past 21 years*, is now available worldwide on PlayStation® 5 (PS5™), PlayStation® 4 (PS4™), Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC***. NBA 2K23 offers an authentic and hyper-real basketball experience showcasing all-new gameplay innovations and animations, the coveted return of the Jordan Challenge mode, an immersive online community experience, and so much more.
“As a franchise, we strive to be at the forefront of basketball culture, and we’re excited for players to get their hands on NBA 2K23 to see the game come to life,” said Greg Thomas, President at Visual Concepts. “With the return of the Jordan Challenges, NBA 2K23 asks players to answer the call and experience some of the greatest performances in basketball history. The incredible attention to detail has led to our most realistic and authentic title yet, with fun integrations that long-time basketball fans and new players will enjoy.”
Additionally, Seasons returns to NBA 2K23 with brand new rewards, music, and challenges for players to compete and win. Jump into the first Season right away to enjoy unique experiences across MyCAREER, MyTEAM, and The W**. Level 40 rewards let you cruise around in a four-person Golf Cart on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and a Hoverbike on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch, while new cards and game modes, better accessibility, more customization, and endless lineup combinations await in MyTEAM.
NBA 2K23 features several new additions and improvements, where rookie players and veteran ballers alike will find a variety of experiences to dive into:

The City is back-back for NBA 2K23
It’s more than just a few tweaks and additions. Next generation gamers will have a bunch of perks when The City launches including the Block and Theater plus a Dreamville music studio.
2K today unveiled new upgrades coming to the City* in NBA® 2K23 for PlayStation® 5 and Xbox Series X|S players. The City has a number of improvements, and seamless integrations with MyCAREER mode, along with so much more.
“The City is an incredibly authentic way for players to experience basketball culture. Tying MyCAREER closely with the City lets players truly live out their career in a unique way on their journey to legendary status on and off the court,” said Erick Boenisch, VP of NBA Development at 2K and Visual Concepts. “Community feedback has been key in the new innovations we've added and we look forward to players experiencing everything we've brought to NBA 2K23 this year.”
The City has a variety of new features and improvements this year, including:
Traversal Times: Based on community feedback, the City is slightly smaller than in NBA 2K22 to provide a better experience. Also, Fast Travel stations have been added to quickly jump around the City;
Affiliation Boroughs: Completely revamped boroughs have relocated and turned thematic destinations that really touch upon the true essence of each borough;
The Block and Theater: The new mecca of competition, the Block, is located in the exact center of the City where players can find all of the great content in one central hub. The Theater replaces the warehouse buildings and will serve as a hub to play instant matchmaking games. Every Friday, the four-event playlist will completely swap out to four new events.
Dreamville Studio: Founded by Grammy-nominated artist and producer J. Cole, Dreamville Studio is a location MyPLAYERs will gain access to if they prove they have what it takes to befriend J. Cole in MyCAREER during their quest to win over the City.
The Arena: New location where to play MyCAREER games, the Arena provides a pre-game atmosphere with a sprawling plaza out front. To prepare for the game, players will enter and show off their fit in front of the waiting media, complete any available quests, and more, followed by taking questions from the media post-game.
Event Center and Jordan Challenge Building: The Event Center’s all-new design and look adds a whole new level of flair, fitting for such an important building, while the Jordan Challenge Building will provide players with easy-access to the new in-game mode.
Seasons will also make a return in the City, including a fresh set of rewards available to earn every six weeks. Seasons will once again allow players to access new content and earn rewards for no additional cost. More information on what's coming for Season 1 will be revealed at launch.

If you were on the fence about securing NBA 2K23 for any number of reasons, it all changes - now. The iconic NBA 2K franchise is making sure this year’s release is unlike any previous one by adding an entire game-changing feature focused on rewriting league history in epic fashion.
NBA 2K23’s Eras feature is going to blow people’s minds
There’s a lot to unpack in a single post so let’s try to keep it simple. A brand-new feature called Eras is centered on giving PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S gamers the chance to experience an ability to change the very fabric of NBA history by creating iconic moments with NBA legends and classic teams.
“This is a banner year for MyNBA, and our team is incredibly excited for fans of the game mode to explore the changes that have been in the making for over a decade,” said Erick Boenisch, VP of NBA Development at 2K and Visual Concepts. “MyNBA Eras takes the in-depth MyNBA experience of years past and plugs it into some of the most iconic periods of the NBA, allowing players to explore endless ‘what if?’ scenarios in the most authentic way possible.”
It’s more than just a few unforgettable moments. From Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson and Larry Bird classic Finals clashes to those epic Kobe Bryant moments, it’s all in Eras.
MyNBA provides players with a time machine that allows them to start a new MyNBA save at a specific point in NBA history called an Era. Players can play through solo, or join up with friends and choose to either relive or rewrite key moments, including:
The Magic Vs Bird Era: Starting in 1983, players will find themselves in the heat of the Magic Johnson vs. Larry Bird rivalry that took over the league. Fans can rewrite 1980’s NBAhistory while they compete to draft the likes of Michael Jordan, Akeem Olajuwon, or any of the other NBA legends who were drafted in that legendary decade;
The Jordan Era: Beginning in 1991, The Jordan Era puts players right at the beginning of Jordan’s dominant run with the Chicago Bulls. They will battle with Isiah Thomas’ “Bad Boys” Detroit Pistons, John Stockton and Karl Malone, Olajuwon’s Houston Rockets, and Patrick Ewing’s New York Knicks for a chance to claim 1990’s basketball supremacy;
The Kobe Era: The Kobe Bryant era takes fans back to 2002, where a new generation of talent had emerged in the West, including Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs, Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves, Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks, and of course, the Black Mamba himself, Kobe Bryant. In addition to competing against the legends of this era, players will also be fighting for draft position in anticipation of the legendary 2003 draft class;
The Modern Era: The previous MyNBA experience is now dubbed the Modern Era. Longtime fans of the mode can continue to start with the most up-to-date rosters available and enjoy the traditional MyNBA experience.
While the world awaits more updates, this could truly give gamers the chance to ‘possibly’ play as some previously unplayable legends like Reggie Miller and Charles Barkley when NBA 2K23 drops next month.
Each Era received a variety of updates to recreate the atmosphere of the times. Every team has at least one unique court along with unique uniforms. Additionally, a specific filter system was intricately designed to recreate the television experience of watching these games as they were originally broadcast, and every expansion team and franchise relocation is accounted for in-game.

The time for NBA 2K23 to arrive is inching closer and the hype is getting intense. 2K has dished out some major new details and features of the highly-anticipated Jordan Challenge mode set to launch more than a decade before launching in the NBA 2K franchise.
The Jordan Challenge details have arrived
Just like back in NBA 2K11, you’re going to experience the icon Michael Jordan’s most iconic moments from his days as a college sensation, those wild playoff battles and his legacy-djfinining Finals performances.
2K today unveiled new details and features of the Jordan Challenge mode coming to NBA® 2K23. The game mode features 15 playable moments from Michael Jordan’s career that let players relive his legacy from the early days as a college sensation, to his game-winning shot in the 1998 NBA Finals.
“The Jordan Challenge is an immersive experience unlike anything NBA 2K fans have seen, completely rebuilding the challenges from 2K11 and adding five new moments,” said Erick Boenisch, VP of NBA Development at Visual Concepts. “Our team took everything into consideration when constructing this game mode; the arenas, the players, the uniforms, the broadcast, and the play style of the era have been accounted for in an effort to give fans a truly authentic and unique playable Jordan experience.”
The Jordan Challenge introduces iconic NBA moments and in-game innovations, including:
Experience a breathtaking recreation of a bygone era, from the 1982 NCAA National Championship to the 1998 NBA Finals. Each challenge features a pre-game interview with a luminary who was a part of what made every game special;
A complete presentational package including an intricately designed video filter system that recreates the television experience of these games as they were originally broadcast during the 1980s and 1990s, showcasing the look, feel and sound that take players back to the original game;
Key gameplay changes to fit the era, such as a heavier focus on the post and mid-range game and reworking the transition game for the 1980s feel, including tighter transition lanes and more players cutting to the basket with a numbers advantage, as opposed to the spotting up for three you see in today’s NBA;
More physicality modeled on the floor and in the paint, along with new signature style upgrades for classic greats like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, featuring all-new jump shot, layup and dunk packages;
Hand-checking and hard-hitting body-ups for a different feel to the one-on-one battles with accurately represented regulations that mirror the 1990s basketball era, like the Detroit Pistons “Bad Boys” with their famous “Jordan Rules” and more.
